ATQPOD020 || Douby

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

It is a pleasure for us to welcome Tom Montalto aka Douby for edition 20 of the Arteq podcast.

Douby is a young, hungry, and highly skilled artist with a keen ear for warming, driving, minimal house music.

This set is a beauty, and we thank you Tom for your efforts. We look forward to having you play at one of our events soon.

More from Arteq and Douby below.

What direction did you take on the podcast?

For this podcast, I’ve taken the same direction I normally take with my performances. Rolling basslines, percussive grooves and jazzy melodies. I tend to incorporate those three features into my ideal dance floor vibe.

Why did you decide to go this way?

I personally can’t help but dance to vibrant house-y beats, and I hope my feelings are felt by the listeners. I had a lot of fun recording this mix.

What did you use to record this mix?

Pioneer DDJ-RB - Also the same piece of equipment I used to learn the craft and definitely what I’d recommend to anyone wanting to learn to DJ. Cheap, compact and easy to use.

What is the meaning behind your DJ name?

The story behind Douby is a pretty simple one. It’s my nickname to my close group of friends, and it’s pretty simple and easy to remember so I thought I’d run with it.

When did you start DJing, but more importantly, why?

I began DJ’ing back in 2016. I spent the first year mastering the craft, mixing in my bedroom or at get togethers with my mates. I became obsessed with a DJ’s ability to create a vibe and influence the people that matter, the dance floor maniacs. There’s a special feeling a DJ gets when they see people busting moves to tracks they select, or even produce, and it’s a feeling that will never, ever get old.

You also produce. Tell us, what motivates you to create a song?

I am still very much in the infancy of my producing career. I have been trying my hand for about 18 months now. Producing is an art form, attention to detail is key and no good comes of rushing. I am yet to release a mixed and mastered track, but I have plenty in the works which will be released when the time is right. I have incorporated one of my own tracks into the mix. I hope it’s enjoyed.

Describe Douby in 5 words.

Tough question. I think I’d go with;

Deep

Percussive

Vibrant

Happy

Advantageous

Where do you want to be in 5 years time musically?

I’m not too worried about the future. Whatever happens, happens. I try to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself, but I also believe everyone must have goals. It’s been a discussion point amongst myself and some mates that my absolute goal is to play an afternoon set at the famous Strawberry Fields Beach Stage. If that happens within 5 years, I’ll die a very, very happy man. If it doesn’t, it’s something to continue striving for.

How have you been during the turbulent year of 2020?

As good as can be. I’m lucky enough to still be working my day job and I know a lot of people are stuck at home. I am thankful that I still have something to keep me busy. It’s also given me time to work on some music, so I’m trying to make the best out of a trying situation.

Is there anything on your mind that you would like to say?

We’re all living in a very different world to what we are used to. Until we can dance in sweaty rooms and dusty dancefloors, stay safe and listen to good music. <3
